Madurai Kamaraj University detects "mischief" in panel of names as examiners

MADURAI: A case of a former Controller of Examinations misleading the Vice-Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University while giving a panel of names as examiners has been detected.

The accused is a professor in the MBA department. During an enquiry, it was found that he had `misled' the authorities giving false information by projecting a lecturer as professor and later including the name in the panel violating all norms.

Senior officials told The Hindu on Tuesday that the enquiry report of the incident was placed before the Syndicate and it was decided to debar the professor from being a research guide anymore.

The professor, who was a Controller of Examinations earlier, recommended the names of lecturers working in Alagappa University, Karaikudi, for being external examiners by stating that they were professors.

"The Vice-Chancellor cleared a name in the given list of names and the response from Alagappa University was shocking to the MKU as the candidate turned out to be a lecturer and not a professor," sources said.

When the incident came to light a few months back, the university probed the matter and called the professor for an enquiry. As `mischief' was found in the episode, the Syndicate, at its meeting held here on Monday, took a decision to debar the `guilty' from being a research guide.

As per the eligibility norms, an examiner in the Ph. D. panel must be a professor with 10 years of teaching experience but in this case the MKU authorities found that the person concerned was only a lecturer with two years of experience.

When contacted, the Vice-Chancellor, P. Maruthamuthu, said the action was initiated with the permission of the Syndicate.
