HASSAN: The Congress won the Mallipatna Zilla Panchayat seat, for which byelection was held on October 8. Despite the Janata Dal (Secular) making its best efforts to wrest the seat, it failed as a sympathy wave helped the Congress in retaining the seat, which it won earlier. With the death of G.T. Krishnamurthy, the Mallipatna seat fell vacant and Congress fielded G.T. Puneet, son of Krishnamurthy, against JD (S) candidate K.V. Keshavamurthy. Puneet defeated Keshavamurthy by a margin of 54 votes. Independent candidate Huchappa lost his deposit by securing a mere 45 votes.
