MYSORE: Glowing tributes were paid to T.N. Sreekantaiya, one of the tallest figures of Kannada literature, at a seminar held on here on Tuesday to mark the birth centenary of the literary giant. The seminar was organised by the TNS Birth Centenary Committee, the Ministry of Human Resource Development and the Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore. The contributions of TNS, as he was popularly known, to linguistics was discussed. The theme of the seminar was "Borrowing and adaptation in Dravidian languages" and it was expected to enable researchers to study the whole gamut of language contact and borrowing and its impact on the structure of Dravidian languages. Linguists from different Dravidian languages such as Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Tulu and other minor Dravidian languages are expected to present papers dealing with the process of borrowing and adaptation in their languages. L.S. Seshagiri Rao, well-known critic and retired professor of English, Bangalore University, said it was TNS who gave an excellent text of Kannada grammar and who set standards in editing ancient texts. "It was he who gave a text of poetics which has no equal in Kannada and perhaps no equal in any Indian language," Prof. Seshagiri Rao said. T.S. Nagabhushan, B.B. Rajapurohit and other scholars were present.
