Steps to prevent animals straying onto runway

T.S. Shankar

CHENNAI: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is working out steps to stop straying of dogs and other animals into the restricted operational area, including the main runway of the Chennai airport.

In the latest in a string of incidents, the pilot of a Jet Airways flight spotted a "dead dog" from the cockpit as he was taking off for Bangalore on Saturday night.

AAI authorities do not have any detail about how the dog was killed, but sources in the Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower say the dog could have been killed in the "heavy jet blast." The ATC sources also checked with flight commanders before the flight took off and learnt that there was no abnormality.
