MANGALORE: Several writers from the region welcomed the language policy announced by the State Government, at a meet convened by the Dakshina Kannada district unit of Kannada Sahitya Parishat on Tuesday. Pradip Kumar Kalkura, president of the parishat said the Government's decision to introduce Kannada in English medium schools, and English in Kannada medium schools from the first standard was a step in the right direction. He criticised Chandrasekhar Patil, State president of Kannada Sahitya Parishat for opposing the policy. Mr. Patil had said the decision to introduce English from the first standard in Kannada medium schools was anti-Kannada. Writers were of the opinion that teaching English was essential for the survival of Kannada medium schools. At the same time, all students in the State must know Kannada.
