: Noted musicologist B.M. Sundaram was honoured for completing 50 years of service to classical music and dance, at a function organised on Tuesday.
Veteran musician M. Balamuralikrishna, under whom Mr. Sundaram trained in Carnatic music, said he was very happy to have a disciple like him. "He is a musician, musicologist, researcher, multilingual scholar, composer, conductor, director and composer.
He is one of my first students," he said, adding "He gives me the same amount of respect today, as he did several years ago."
Mr. Sundaram, in his acceptance speech, recalled his student days at Vishakapatnam, where he learnt under Mr. Balamuralikrishna the gurukula way. "I was treated like his son and I learnt so much from him. In fact, he asked me to consider research on music, as there were thousands of vocalists," he said. A. Natarajan, vice-chairman of the `Dr.B.M. Sundaram Felicitation Committee' said he was a perfectionist, "who has a great eye for detail, be it dance or music."
Industrialist Nalli Kuppuswami Chetty commended Mr. Sundaram for his contributions to literature on classical art forms and particularly to the `raga guide' brought out every music season.
