Verdict today on powers to grant pardon
Legal Correspondent
New Delhi:
The Supreme Court will give its verdict on Wednesday on a petition dealing with the scope and powers of the President and the Governor to grant pardon and remission of sentence to convicts in prisons.
A Bench of Justice Arijit Pasayat and Justice S.H. Kapadia had reserved verdict on August 31 on a petition challenging the grant of pardon by the Governor of Andhra Pradesh to Congress leader Gowru Venkata Reddy, convicted to 10 years imprisonment in a murder case involving workers of the Telugu Desam Party. The petitioners Epuru Sudhakar and another, sons of the deceased, had sought quashing of the Governor's order since Mr. Reddy was granted remission by the State Government after he had served a jail term of only five years of the total 10.
