Thiruvananthapuram: The Customs department on Tuesday seized few imported luxury cars owned by some posh hotels in the State on charges that the managements violated the Customs Act. Sources said the hotel owners had imported the cars by paying a nominal five per cent duty under the Export Promotion Capital Goods scheme. The scheme allows foreign exchange earners in the country to import goods necessary for their business at a minimum rate of Customs duty. The normal import duty for luxury cars is more than 120 per cent of the original price. The Customs case is that the importers had violated the conditions of the export promotion scheme by not registering the vehicles as tourist taxis. The vehicles were often used for personal purposes.
