Genetic strain improvement vital, says expert

Thiruvananthapuram: Speakers at a national seminar on `Recent trends in microbial technology and engineering' held at the Malankara Catholic College, Kaliakkavilai last week highlighted the role of microbes in developing new drugs and vaccines against dreadful diseases like dengue fever and chikungunya. In her lecture, Dr. Vidhya Ramaswamy, director, International Centre for Bioresources Management said, microorganisms had a crucial role in the industrial production of food, medicines and other compounds. She said genetic strains improvement could help in achieving commercially viable production — a key aspect in industrial biotechnology. "Genomic and computational interventions will open up new avenues for making microbial industry and technology, the ever demanding strategy for the future," she said. Dr.M. Chandrasekhar, Department of Biotechnology, Cusat was the chief guest. Dr.M.D. Bashyam of the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics, Hyderabad and Dr.S. Umesh Kumar of the Central Food Technological Research Institute delivered lectures.
