Chief Minister says safety of all areas will be ensured

KOCHI: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has assured Palluruthy MLA C.M. Dinesh Mani that the safety of areas like Chellanam and Fort Kochi would be ensured while establishing the Vallarpadam International Container Transshipment Terminal.

The Chief Minister said this in reply to a question from Mr. Dinesh Mani in the State Assembly.

The Chief Minister said that as it was a greenfield project, there was no threat perception for Chellanam and Fort Kochi, said Mr. Dinesh Mani in a press release here. However, the Chief Minister assured that the changes in water pressure due to massive dredging in the Port channel would be studied. Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS) would carry out these studies.

The report from the CWPRS would also suggest remedial measures if there are any adverse impact due to the activities being undertaken for establishing the Vallarpadam project. The Port Trust had assured that these remedial steps would be implemented along with the project, reassured the Chief Minister.

The Port Trust has issued a warning to fishermen that between October 11 and 18 scientific studies are being carried out by National Oceanographic Institute and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in areas about 7.5 km south-west of Buoy number 1. The studies are being carried out at depths ranging between 15 and 20 metres.
