HYDERABAD: With filth and garbage all around, people in several slums of Secunderabad lead miserable lives. With none to attend to the problem, they are a hapless lot. In Bathakamma Kunta slum, Amberpet, spotting children with grime-laden pigs near the garbage dump is a common sight. In Manikeshwar Nagar near Osmania University, children play on top of a huge mound of garbage near a gutter. In fact, it has turned into a playground of sorts. In the interior parts of Addagutta, windows and doors are closed from early morning just to make sure mosquitoes do not enter houses. In Parsigutta, Zamistanpur and Nagamayya Kunta -- all in and around Ramnagar Gundu, the stench of garbage is all pervading. "We have to chase the officials from dawn to dusk just to get fogging done here. Garbage is the sole cause for mosquitoes here and there is no official who can help us out," said G.M Suvarna, daughter of G.M Anjaiah, after whom the Addagutta slum was renamed recently. Considered to be an upmarket colony, Gunrock Enclave is facing serious problems with a large number of its residents falling prey to viral fevers or chikungunya due to mosquitoes. "I thought this was the end of my life. It was nothing short of a miracle that I survived chikungunya ," says President for Gunrock Enclave Resident's Welfare Association Lokhendra Raj Singh. Similar situation prevails in S. R. Nagar, which has a large number of educational institutions and hostels. There is a huge dumping yard, a playground converted into a dumping yard, in the middle of EWS quarters and SRT quarters.
