dated October 12, 1956: Direct talks on Suez issue

The Foreign Ministers of Britain, France and Egypt met in New York on October 10, for their second round of secret talks aimed at finding a solution to the Suez question. The meeting was being held under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General, Mr. Dag Hammarskjoeld, on the closely guarded 38th floor of the towering UN headquarters building. The Egyptian Foreign Minister, Dr. Mahmoud Fawzi, when he left the headquarters, declined to make any comment on the meeting or to say whether he was optimistic or otherwise about the outcome of the talks. In another development, Mr. Selwyn Lloyd, British Foreign Secretary, received Mr. V.K. Krishna Menon, who had talks with President Nasser and British Government leaders in the last few days. It was Mr. Lloyd's third meeting with Mr.Menon in the last 24 hours. The Indian Minister also had a long discussion with Mr. Dmitri Shepilov, the Soviet Foreign Minister.
