Science and technology fair begins

The exhibition highlights major scientific developments in institutions across the country and how it has been made available to the common man

KOCHI: A science and technology fair began at the Siva Temple grounds on Wednesday. Organised by the Swadeshi Science Movement, Kerala, as part of the Swasraya Bharat 2006 — a celebration of national self-reliance — the expo features major scientific developments that has taken place in institutions and how it has been made available to the common man.

The fair highlights the achievements of the country in various fields. Most of the developments are not known to the public, nor do ordinary people know about the kind of work that is going on in the research institutions.

The Department of Atomic Energy, Defence Research Development Organisation, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Department of Science and Technology, Indian Space Research Organisation, Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment, Coconut Development Board, Spices Board, Coir Board, Port Trust, FACT, Bureau of Indian Standards, Housing and Urban Development Organisation, Khadi Village Industries and ANERT are some of the participants at the exhibition.

ISRO and the various laboratories of DRDO have put up stalls, said coordinator of Swasraya. Various agriculture research institutions under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Department of Biotechnology and the Indian Council of Medical Research would also be participating in the expo.

Interactive session

An interactive session for students with the scientific community will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. C.V. Ananda Bose, Joint Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy, would preside over the function. A number of national seminars are also being organised in various colleges.
