Nutrimix project gets a boost

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The Nutrimix project under the Kudumbasree poverty eradication mission has received a shot in the arm with the Government of Kerala issuing an order entrusting Kudumbasree with the responsibility for supplying nutritious supplement to anganwadi children in the State.

The Department of Social Welfare issued the order on September 30 for implementation of the take-home ration of supplementary nutrition for children below the age of three. Kudumbasree's Nutrimix units will supply the supplementary food to the anganwadis spread across the State. The implementation of the programme will be done over three phases to systematically cover the entire State.

According information available from Kudumbasree, a total of 310 units, run by women, manufacturing supplementary nutrition were operational till the end of August.

Intensive training programme for women in various districts are also on to meet the demand for the product from the anganwadis.

The Social Welfare Department had revised its earlier order to hand over to Kudumbasree the responsibility of supplying nutritious supplement for the children in the target group.

Baby food

The Nutrimix project is an ambitious programme that aims to capture the supplementary nutrition market in the State. Initial plans included an annual turnover of around Rs. 200-crore from 500 units that would employ 2,500 women from Kudumbasree units all over Kerala. The project involves producing nutritious baby food developed by the Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI), Kasaragod, in units run by women under self-help groups.

The project also envisaged a production of about three tonnes a month a unit, achieving a total production of 1,500 tonnes of Nutrimix a month throughout the State. Total investments in the planned 500 units would be to the tune of Rs. 12 crore.
