Awards for social service

CHENNAI: Adayar Anbu Palam and the International Refugees Organisation together organised `Aimperum Vizha' last week.

Awards were presented to 15 organisations that rendered commendable service to tsunami victims. Gold medals were presented to 15 individuals.

Venkatesh, a student who lost both his hands in an accident and wrote his examinations using his legs was given Rs.30,000 to complete his teacher's training programme. An award worth Rs.10,000 was presented to Mugam Mamani for putting in 50 years of literary service.

Freedom fighter Sale Velu was given Rs.10,000 for his 50-year fight against casteism.

A gold medal was presented to Narasimhalu of the Andhra Mahila Sabha, who painted with his feet, sold the works and gave the proceeds to tsunami victims.
