Shokeen in quarterfinals

NEW DELHI: Local lads Vivek Shokeen and Ashutosh Singh struggled a bit, but asserted themselves in reaching the men's quarterfinals of the DSCL National tennis championships here on Wednesday.

Ashutosh was playing with ease against Wrik Ganguly, till he had a match point on his opponent's serve in the 10th game of the second set. Ashutosh failed to close out at that stage, and Ganguly, with a big cheering squad backing him, forced the decider with a quality fare in the tie-break.

In the third set, Ashutosh once again allowed things to drift after being up 5-2, but served out the match in the tenth game to bring an end to the drama.

Ashutosh will be up against second seed Aditya Madkekar, who warded off the seasoned Sandeep Kirtane's challenge.

Solid game

Vivek Shokeen dropped the first set for the second time in as many matches, but played a solid game thereafter to outplay qualifier Sandeep Choudhary. He will play Sanam Singh in the quarterfinals.

Parija Maloo, Kelsey Sundaram, Sweta Kumari Solanki and Vishaka Sheoran did well to make it to the quarterfinals in the women's and girls' sections.

Sonal Phadke had an interesting challenge from qualifier Kyra Shroff, but the latter lacked the punch in her shots, much in contrast to her high-decibel grunting, to be able to build on her impressive mobility.
