CPWD to construct new generation stadiums

Staff Reporter

Rs.2,600-crore projects being taken up

KOCHI: Modern construction projects should have flexibility so as to be utilised for multi-purposes, said A. Chakraborti, Director General (Works) of the Central Public Works Department (CPWD).

He said stadiums should be built in such a way that the space could be converted to suit various purposes.

The CPWD was adopting suitable measures to construct new generation stadiums for the Commonwealth Games. The department was also engaged in a variety of construction activities across the country and abroad. It had undertaken projects in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Zambia and so on.

The rehabilitation projects undertaken in the Andamans soon after the tsunami had proved the department's capability to take up assignments under adverse climatic conditions, he said.

The CPWD had started its division in Kochi and had grown into two circles in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode. The airports at Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode were built by the CPWD.

At present, the agency had various projects in India and abroad to the tune of Rs.2,600 crore.
