NEW DELHI: A committee set up to examine various options for ensuring the availability of coking coal to State-owned steel companies is expected to submit its report by the month-end, Steel Secretary, R. S. Pandey, informed newspersons here on Wednesday. Speaking to newspersons on the sidelines of a conference on steel here, Mr. Pandey said: "A committee has been constituted to look at various options so that coking coal demand of SAIL [Steel Authority of India Ltd.] and Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd. (RINL) is met. The report is awaited this month." Earlier, addressing the conference, Mr. Pandey cautioned the steel industry that the sector could get into a glut-like situation by the year 2010-11 if adequate awareness was not created among the masses and the availability of steel increased in rural areas. He pointed out that steel production was expected to increase by 65 million tonnes by 2010-11 from 42 million tonnes now. Mr. Pandey noted that the entire process of production and distribution of steel must be looked into afresh as quality steel was currently not available at affordable prices despite the availability of disposable income in the rural areas.
