Brown sugar seized, two arrested

TUTICORIN: The police and Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) have seized 10 kg of brown sugar, worth Rs 10 crore in the international market, in a joint raid at Tiruchendur on Wednesday.

Manoharan (45) and Anandhi (40) have been arrested.

Based on a tip-off, a police team led by Superintendent of Police John Nicholson and officials from NCB seized the brown sugar from a tea stall run by Anandhi at Amali Nagar.

The substance was kept in a concealed packet at her shop by her friend Manoharan, who is the brother-in-law of former DMK Minister Jennifer Chandran. She is now in the AIADMK.

According to police sources, the accused were planning to smuggle the brown sugar to Sri Lanka.

Both have been remanded under the Narcotic Substances and Psychotropic Substances Act, sources said. — Staff Reporter

Nominated to MKU varsity Syndicate

MADURAI: Two faculty members of the Madurai Kamaraj University--R. Kathiresan, Reader in Commerce (Distance Education), and V. Vijay Arunachalam, Senior Lecturer, Department of Physics--have been nominated to the Syndicate for a three-year term with immediate effect.

Vice-Chancellor, P. Maruthamuthu, made the nominations on seniority basis.

Meanwhile, the process of nominating three from the professors' category is also on. University sources said the Vice-Chancellor would send a panel of names to the Governor and Chancellor, Surjit Singh Barnala, for approval.

The nominees will be announced towards the end of November.

Officials also said elections would be held shortly to fill up vacancies in the Syndicate. — Staff Reporter

World Sight Day today

MADURAI: World Sight Day will be observed on Thursday (October 12) to create public awareness on restoration of vision under the theme "prevention and control of blindness due to diabetic retinopathy."

The second Thursday of October every year is observed as World Sight Day, and the Tamil Nadu Government Ophthalmic Assistants Association, along with Madurai District Blindness Control Society, is organising student-oriented programmes at the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) here.

The association general secretary, M. Veerasamy, said competitions would be held for school students at the GRH auditorium.

Safety awareness campaigns

CHENNAI: In a move to prevent fires, during Deepavali, the Director of School Education has urged educational officers across the State to organise safety awareness campaigns at schools.

School heads have been asked to address students during morning assembly on precautionary measures to be adopted while bursting crackers.

Creating awareness among children would ensure better and quicker reach of the message, a release issued from the Directorate said.

School heads were also requested to advise students to closely follow safety precautions prescribed by the Fire and Police departments.

Army soldier killed

TIRUNELVELI : An army soldier was killed in a road accident near Thiruvenkatam on Wednesday.

The police said that E. Raj (25) of Thiruvengatam, whose marriage was fixed recently, was going in a bike for shopping. When he was trying to overtake a lorry going towards Elayarasanendal, he lost balance and was trapped under a vehicle. He died on the spot.

The Thiruvenkatam police have registered a case.

Rice seized

Nagercoil : The Railway Protection Force police seized 20 bags of rice meant for the Public Distribution System from the Nagercoil-Thiruvananthapuram passenger train on Tuesday. Acting on tip-off, the RPF personnel raided a coach and found out the bags, which were supposed to be smuggled to Kerala.

Poll holiday

MADURAI : Employees of business, trade, industrial undertaking or any other establishment should be granted holiday to vote in the ensuing elections (to local bodies).

In a press release issued here on Wednesday, the Joint Commissioner of Labour, P. Jayasingan, said that no deduction or abatement of wages should be made on account of the holiday.

Any employer contravening the stipulations would attract punishment under Section 135 B of the Representation of People's Act, 1951, the release said. — Special Correspondent

Suspended

ERODE: The Tiruchengode Thasildar on Wednesday suspended village assistant A. Chandrasekaran on charges of campaigning for his wife.

Chandrasekaran's wife, Vasanthi, is contesting for the panchayat chairman's post in Odaipalli Agraharam Panchayat, where he works. Following complaints from other contestants, Kadirvel, Thasildar, suspended the village assistant.

Business day observed

ERODE: As part of National Postal Week celebrations, Business Development Day was observed in Erode Head Post Office on Tuesday. Participating in the function, the Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, S. Murugan, said the department had launched various services for its customers.

Application forms for the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission Examinations were sold through post offices. Applications for passports can be submitted at the head post offices in Erode, Bhavani and Gobichettipalayam Head Post Offices.

Heavy rain lashes Dharapuram

ERODE: Dharapuram and its surrounding areas experienced heavy rain on Tuesday night. Dharapuram recorded 51 mm rainfall, Moolanure - 46 mm, Perundurai - 41 mm, Kangeyam - 37.2 mm, Erode - 13 mm and Bhavani 12 mm.

Woman murdered

ERODE: A woman was allegedly murdered by her lover on Tuesday. According to the police, Anbarasi (20) and Kadirvelu (24) were working in the construction site of private spinning mill at Olapalayam near Vellakoil. They were in love for the past few months.

On Tuesday evening, Anbarasi demanded that Kadirvelu make arrangements for their marriage. On his refusal, a quarrel arose between the two, which led to the killing of Anbarasi.

The Vellakoil police have registered a case and have launched a search for Kadirvelu.

KARUR: Widespread rainfall has been registered in the district in the 24 hrs ending 8.30 am on Wednesday. The chief amounts of rainfall registered in various locations across the districts (in mm) are: Karur - 67.40, Kadavur - 50, K. Paramathi - 40.60, Palaviduthi - 29.20, Anaipalayam - 10, Kulithalai - 9, Aravakurichi - 3, Mayanoor - 3 and Krishnarayapuram -2.40.

TIRUCHI: The water level in the Mettur dam stood at 95.61 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Wednesday with an inflow of 16,400 cusecs and a discharge of 15,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Holiday declared

Udhagamandalam: October 13 will be a public holiday in the Nilgiris on account of the 2006 civic elections. Stating this here on Wednesday, Collector and District Election Officer Santosh. K Misra said that all the government offices including industrial establishments, government controlled bodies and all the educational institutions should remain closed to facilitate their employees to exercise their franchise. Stating that it will be a paid holiday for all the employees, he said that if any of the employers contravened the stipulations they would be prosecuted under Section 135 B of the Representation of Peoples Act, 1951.
