Gajurel flown to Kolkata
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI:
The Nepalese Maoist leader, R. Chandra Prakash Gajurel, was on Wednesday flown to Kolkata in connection with a case there.
The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM), Egmore, had issued a transit warrant allowing the Maoist leader to be taken to West Bengal. The High Court upheld the order, ruling that the West Bengal police were at liberty to execute the warrant against Mr. Gajurel.
With the issue of the warrant, Mr. Gajurel, accompanied by police, including a Deputy Superintendent of Police from Tamil Nadu, was flown to Kolkata by an early morning flight. The CMM had ordered that the Tamil Nadu DSP should accompany Mr. Gajurel till he was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Jalpaiguri.
Earlier, the Madras High Court had dismissed a writ petition by Mr. Gajurel seeking a writ of mandamus forbearing the Central and State Governments from deporting him without following the procedure under the Extradition Act. It treated as closed a habeas corpus petition praying for the production of Mr. Gajurel before the court.
