Avvai Illam bags Meyyammai Achi award

In recognition its service to the uplift of women

CHENNAI: The "Rani Lady Meyyammai Achi Birthday Commemoration Award" for 2006 was presented on Wednesday to Avvai Illam, Chennai, on the occasion of the 102nd birth anniversary of Rani Lady Meyyammai Achi of Chettinad.

The award of Rs. 1 lakh was in recognition of the Illam's yeoman service to the uplift of women. It was presented by M. Thavamani, Principal, Ethiraj College for Women (Autonomous), and received by V. Susheela, secretary and correspondent of Avvai Illam.

Dr. Thavamani and Sudha Seshayyan, Head of the Department of Anatomy, Stanley Medical College, recalled the sterling qualities of Meyyammai Achi, and Muthulakshmi Reddy, the founder of the Home. They said the two dedicated themselves to the uplift of women, particularly through education.

Trust president M.A.M.R. Muthiah read out the citation.
