VISAKHAPATNAM: Rows of designer deepams mark the arrival of the `festival of lights', Deepavali.

Neither the multi-coloured glitz of electric lights nor the romance of the candle has the mysterious glow of the deepam in its myriad colours, avatars and sizes.

With just a few days to go for the festival, the markets have lighted up with an array of shapes and colours of deepams.

Embellished with charming innovative touches, the modest earthen deepam has taken on new forms. Evolving design inputs and zingy colours have given new-age dimensions to the deepam.

Beckoning sight

Pretty dome-shaped deepams with small `niches', serrated bell-shaped lamps and very charming flat ones with interesting designer handles are on display at Darling's Paradise.

Dozens of deepams designed in the moulds of Lord Ganesha and goddess Lakshmi are a beckoning sight. The shop has around 15 different shapes of deepams ranging from Rs.8 to Rs.150.

Painted gold, silver, red and in all rainbow colours, the sets of deepams sport enticing shapes and are covered with tiny seed pearls. The pricing too is not so exorbitant if one looks at the intricate designs. These can be specially used as gifts for friends and relatives during the festival.

To give a sublime touch to the festive spirit, jelly candles in different colours can be a good option. "Priced at Rs.25, the candles can burn continuously for three to four hours," says Yeshwant Parekh, proprietor of Darling's Paradise.
