Coastal security police station at Karaikal by October end

Rs.5. 44 crore central funds for the station; two more to be set up

PUDUCHERRY: The first coastal security police station in the Union Territory will become operational at Karaikal by the end of this month.

Till a permanent facility was established near the proposed fishing harbour at Karaikal, a rented building adjacent to Arasalar Bridge would house the station, Chhaya Sharma, Senior Superintendent of Police (Crime and Intelligence) told The Hindu .

"The station would be formally inaugurated by the end of this month," she said.

The coastal security station would have a marine and costal wings and 21 persons drawn from Territorial police force had been selected for deployment in the two wings.

Necessary armaments and three boats for patrolling had already been sanctioned, she noted.

The Centre had sanctioned Rs.5. 44 crore for establishing the station, she said.

Permanent facility

As far as the permanent facility, the territorial administration had identified one hector of land close to the proposed fishing harbour

The Ministry of Home Affairs had sanctioned a total of three stations to the Union Territory.

The other two stations would be established in Puducherry and Mahe. She said the Karaikal station was taken up on priority basis due to its vulnerability of possible infiltration by the Liberation Tigers Tamil Ealem and other anti-national forces.

As per the MHA plan, all the three stations had to be established within five years time. These stations would work in close association with the Coast Guard, which mans the entire coastline.
