CUDDALORE: Parts of Cuddalore and Villupuram districts are ready to go to the first phase of the local body elections on Friday. All the election paraphernalia are in place and the security personnel have taken position. The campaign for the first phase of poll came to a close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. During the closing hours, the autorickshaws, cars and vans fitted with public address systems were seen crisscrossing each other, making a last ditch attempt to catch the attention of the voters. In the past 10 days, the candidates along with their supporters went on foot covering the lanes and bylanes of the respective wards, knocking on every door and doling out liberal promises to fulfil the local needs. Their focus was mainly on addressing the lack of basic amenities such as drainage, water, road and sanitation facilities. Independents were at their persuasive best, as they wooed the voters to give them a chance to represent their cause. In the first phase, the following places will go to poll
Cuddalore
Municipalities Nellikuppam, Panruti and Vriddhachalam; Town panchayats - Gangaikondan, Mangalampet, Melpattambakkam, Pennadam and Thorapadi; and, Panchayat unions - Annagramam, Khammapuram, Mangalore, Nallur, Panruti and Vriddhachalam.

The timing of the polling will be from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Different colour ballot papers will be used for the local bodies: town panchayats, municipalities and panchayat Wards - white; panchayat union presidents - pink, panchayat union wards - green, and district panchayat wards - yellow. As proof of identity the voters can carry one of the 14 documents suggested by the State Election Commission such as Electors Photo Identity card, passport, driving licence, arms licence, PAN cards, identity cards issued by employers and educational institutions, ration cards issued before May 31,2006 and so on.
