ICMR team visits Cherthala

ALAPPUZHA: A three-member team of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) visited the chikungunya-affected Cherthala taluk in the district on Wednesday and collected mosquito samples from there. The team, led by senior ICMR scientist S. Tiwari, said the present intensive mosquito eradication drive should be continued every year during the rainy seasons to prevent outbreak of epidemics. A permanent system was needed to ensure proper sanitation and monitor mosquito growth. The initial analysis of the team showed that a large variety of mosquitoes were present at Cherthala. - Staff Reporter

Statue of Raja Ravi Varma to be erected

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Culture Minister M.A. Baby has said that a bronze statue of Raja Ravi Varma will be erected at the school of art set up in his name at Mavelikara. Replying to a submission by M. Murali (Congress) in the Assembly on Wednesday, the Minister said a meeting would be convened soon to discuss the question of taking over the Mavelikara Ulsavamadhom Palace to perpetuate Ravi Varma's memory. This could be only with the consent of the family and in consultation with the people's representatives in the area, he said. — Special Correspondent

Vigilance raid at Walayar check-post

PALAKKAD: In a Vigilance raid at the Walayar inter-State sales tax check-post on Wednesday, the officials seized unaccounted cash to the tune of Rs.10,040 from the counter. The team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Saifulla Sayeed also seized Rs.425 from a staff member at the check-post. The raid was conducted at 2 p.m. when the shift duty changed. The Vigilance officials said the money was seized when the officials were trying to share the amount after their duty ended at 2 p.m. — Staff Reporter

Question paper leak: accused remanded

Kochi: A special court of the Central Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday remanded to CBI custody C.P. Vijayan Nair, former Superintendent of Pariksha Bhavan, arrested in connection with the SSLC question paper leak case. He was remanded to CBI custody till October 13. — Staff Reporter

Plea to settle strike in Lord Krishna Bank

KOCHI: The All India Private Sector Bank Officers' Federation has threatened that the 36-day-old strike by employees of Lord Krishna Bank would be extended to other private sector banks if the Union Government and the Reserve Bank of India failed to intervene. A press release issued by the Federation here on Wednesday said that it would appeal to 10,000 of its members to join the strike in support of the demands raised by unions in Lord Krishna Bank. — Staff Reporter

Six arrested on murder charge

THRISSUR: The police on Wednesday arrested six persons in connection with the murder of Chittilappilli Jestin, who was wanted in several cases, at Panamukku near the city on Tuesday. The police identified the arrested as Panamukku Inchipullikattil Biju, 21, Panamukku Permangalath Kannan, 27, Vadukkara Nellissery Veettil Roy, 24, Panamukku Kuriakkodan Veettil Jijith, 20, Kanimangalam Parappukkaran Sony, 19, and Kanimangalam Valiyeveettil Shijo, 20. — Staff Reporter

Prisoner dies in hospital

Thrissur: Alikutty, 34, of Neduthuruthy House at Palluruthy, an inmate of the Mattanchery Sub-Jail who was undergoing treatment at Chest Hospital in Mulankunnathukavu died on Wednesday, the police said. He was an accused in a case of attempted murder. Police said he was terminally ill. — Staff Reporter

SFI unleashing terror: ABVP

Thrissur : The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has alleged that the Students Federation of India (SFI) is unleashing terror in the colleges in the State under the protection of the Left Democratic Front Government. Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, AVBP State secretary V.P. Rajeevan said there would be serious consequences if the alleged situation continued. — Staff Reporter

Technical festival begins

Thrissur: `Quintessence,' a technical festival organised by the Department of Electronics and Communication of the Government College of Engineering, began here on Wednesday. R. Kanakarajan, associate director of the Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory, inaugurated the festival.
