HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy has said that the Supreme Court in its verdict in the clemency given to the life convict Gouru Venkat Reddy has not attributed any motive to the Government or to him. "It has only said that there are procedural lapses in the granting of remission of sentence to Venkat Reddy," the Chief Minister said in his reaction to the apex court's ruling here on Wednesday. "The court has not found fault with the Chief Minister, the Governor or the Government. It has not passed strictures against us nor indicted the Government," he added. Dr. Reddy pointed out that the apex court had not denied Venkat Reddy an opportunity to again seek clemency from the Governor. Stating that the Government would honour and respect the Supreme Court's ruling, the Chief Minister said further action against Venkat Reddy would be taken as per the law. Reacting strongly to the opposition parties' demand for his resignation, he said that they were politicising the issue without going through the full text of the judgement. To a question, he said there was no scope to appeal against the ruling. "It is up to Venkat Reddy to again approach the Governor seeking clemency," he added. Meanwhile, the Telugu Desam Party, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi and the BJP demanded the Chief Minister's resignation on the ground that he had violated the Constitution. TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu also wanted removal of Union Power Minister S. K. Shinde from the Cabinet for his action as Governor in approving the remission. TRS chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao as well as Mr. Naidu drew a parallel with the resignation of Mr. Nedurmalli Janardhan Reddy as Chief Minister when the High Court passed strictures against his Government in the medical colleges case.
