ONGOLE: District Collector B. Udaya Lakshmi has asked officials and elected representatives to make use of the employment assurance scheme to provide work to labourers and check their migration to other places in search of work.

Addressing a meeting of Mandal Development Officers, Mandal Revenue Officers, ZPTC and MPTC members here on Wednesday, she said the State Government agreed to implement the employment assurance programme in 42 drought-affected mandals in the district.

    Wages in cash

The scheme would be launched in Prakasam district on November 1. She said the programme would provide employment to any worker for 100 days in a year and they would be paid their wages in cash and through post offices or banks. She asked elected representatives to ensure that no machines were used in the programme.

They can take up labour intensive works like desilting of tanks, construction of percolation tanks, water harvesting and water conservation measures and land development. They can also use 20 per cent of the funds for tree plantation.

    Field staff

Zilla Parishad Chairperson Katam Arunamma said the programme can be used to create assets and develop villages. Darsi MLA B. Subba Reddy said the works should be selected at a gram sabha and panchayat secretaries should be accountable for their proper implementation.

Field staff would be provided and a person can be employed for supervising the works on payment of Rs. 1200 per month.

Ms. Udaya Lakshmi also asked the participants to take up special drive for sanitation in villages to check spread of mosquitoes and fight diseases like chikungunya and dengue.
