Protest planned against `power highway'

Staff Reporter

KOTTAYAM: The action council which is against the proposed 400 kV Power Highway from Koodamkulam to Thrissur has expressed anguish at a statement made by the Union Minister for Energy in the Rajya Sabha recently on the proposed power line.

According to convener Sobichan Abraham and joint convener Philip K. Isaac, the alignment as given in the statement would harm the interests of thousands of farmers in the State.

The action council had proposed a simpler alternative at a meeting convened by the Chief Minister on September 19.

The council suggested that the alignment of one of the five 220 kV lines lying unused by the Kerala State Electricity Board be used for the proposed Power Highway.

The alignment could be handed over to the Power Grid Corporation for the purpose, they said.

The proposed 440 kV line could be routed through the alignment, safeguarding the interests of the farmers, they said.
