BANGALORE: The two-day seminar for match referees concluded at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) here on Wednesday. The day's highlight was the interactive session that the former captain and umpire S. Venkatraghavan had with the 35 participants. Venkatraghavan spoke about the expectations the umpires have with regard to the functioning of a match referee. "It is absolutely important in India that we develop top-grade referees," Venkatraghavan said.
"I stressed today that the ICC referee does not work in isolation. He is going to tell the umpires that he is there to help them. He is going to help the umpires perform better because as it is, the job of an umpire is an onerous task. So the umpires do expect the referees to make their job a bit easy," Venkatraghavan said. In the two-day seminar, the referees were briefed about the need for them to double up as talent spotters. The referees will now also don the roles adopted by the erstwhile Talent Resource Development Officers (TRDO).
