Special Correspondent

Focus on controlling spread of mosquitoes

  • Similar drive in rural areas on Sunday
  • Officials told to monitor all aspects of health

MATTER OF CONCERN: A patient from Amadalavalasa, suspected to be suffering from dengue, being brought to the Government hospital at Srikakulam on Wednsday

Srikakulam: As part of mosquito eradication drive, `complete sanitation' day would be observed in all the five municipalities in the district -- Srikakulam, Amadalavalasa, Itchpuram, Palasa-Kasibugga and Rajam -- on Thursday. According to Joint Collector M.Veerabrahmaiah, holding additional charge of Collector, the sanitation drive would start at 5 am and continue till 5 pm. Senior officers of the civic bodies and the Health Department, along with sanitation workers, would visit all wards and explain to people the various aspects with regard to hygiene and controlling spread of mosquitoes which would cause ailments like dengue and malaria.

Arrangements were made to release gambhushia fish into drains and other mosquito breeding pools. These fish kill mosquitoes.

He said a similar drive would be taken up in rural areas on Sunday.

Mr. Veerabrahamaih visited the Government headquarters hospital here on Wednesday and talked to one P.Ramanamma of Amadalavalasa who was admitted here with suspected dengue fever.

    Fogging

On enquiry the Collector was informed that 124 cases of fever were registered on October 9, followed by 130 cases the next day. Most of the in-patients were suffering from malaria.

District Medical and Health Officer K. Jaganmohana Rao informed the Collector that samples of blood had been sent to Pune for confirmation. Fogging had already been started in Amadalavalasa Municipality, Dr. Rao said.

The Joint Collector instructed officials to monitor all aspects of health on a daily basis. Private hospitals should also be covered, he said. Medicines required for controlling fever had been dispatched to Primary Health Centres and there was no shortage of medicines, he said.
