`No need for probe into violence'

MANGALORE: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Wednesday ruled out a probe into the violence in Mangalore.

Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Kumaraswamy said the Government's priority at this moment was to restore peace and normality and put Dakshina Kannada district on the track of development.

LeT case: State seeks expeditious hearing

BANGALORE: The State Government on Wednesday sought expeditious hearing on the bail petitions filed by three alleged Laskher-e-Taiba (LeT) activists who have been arrested by the Bangalore city police.

When the matter came up in High Court, State Public Prosecutor S. Dore Raju sought early hearing of the trial, saying that the Government was interested in early disposal of the case in which the alleged South India commander of the LeT had also sought bail along with two other activists.

Justice A.C. Kabbin, who is hearing the case, adjourned further hearing to October 18. — Staff Reporter

Revanna criticises Congress

Bangalore: H.D. Revanna, Minister for Public Works and Energy, has hit back at the Congress for alleging that Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy was focussing attention on Mysore because a byelection to the Chamundeshwari Assembly constituency was round the corner.

He told presspersons here on Wednesday that the focus of the coalition Government was development and this was not palatable to the Congress which was out to pull down the Government. "I do not understand the Congress leaders. They should learn to be patient." — Special Correspondent

Campaign by Kannada groups

Belgaum: Various Kannada organisations led by Belgaum District Kannada Organisations Action Committee on Wednesday launched a "memorandum campaign" for designating Belgaum as second capital of the State.

In its first memorandum sent to Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, the committee said the people of Belgaum and north Karnataka had welcomed the announcement made by the Government to accord "second capital" status on Belgaum. The people had also whole-heartedly welcomed the decision to lay foundation stone for construction of Vikas Soudha in Belgaum by November 1.

`EXIM Club'

Bangalore: The Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) has set up an exclusive cell for promotion of international trade, namely "EXIM Club". It has also signed a memorandum of understanding with the State's Centre for Export Promotion for organising export-related programmes throughout the State. — Staff Reporter

Ex-Minister mourned

Bangalore: Governor T.N. Chaturvedi has expressed shock at the death of the former Union Labour Minister Ravindra Varma.

The Governor in his message said that Mr. Varma as chairman of the Labour Commission had done monumental work through his report for the betterment of the condition of labourers in the country. — Staff Reporter

Two killed in clash

BELLARY: Two persons were killed and four injured in a clash by rival groups in Hulikunti village in Gudekote police station limits in Kudligi taluk on Wednesday. The enmity between Seetaramgowda, an advocate and land lord and M. Pandurangaiah is allegedly the cause of the clash. Pandurangaiah died on the spot. His brother, Oblesh, who suffered multiple injuries, died in hospital. — Staff Correspondent

Dies of snake-bite

Sirsi: Manjunath Bhaira Naik (56) of Malavatti on the outskirts of Siddapur town near here, died of snake-bite on Tuesday. He used to catch snakes as a hobby. 'He had been to a village on call to catch a snake. He brought it to the town when it bit him. Later he went to the forest and freed the snake and got admitted to the hospital but in vain.

Tanker overturns, panic in village

HASSAN: Traffic on NH-48 was blocked for more than 24 hours, as a gas tanker going to Bangalore from Mangalore overturned near Jodighatte village in Channarayapatna taluk, after it rammed an autorickshaw on Tuesday. Auto driver Jagadish (23) died on the spot. The cooking gas in the tanker started leaking and it sparked anxiety among the villagers. Police rushed to

the spot and tried to plug the leak, with the help of fire tenders. They summoned experts from Mangalore and Mysore to attend to the problem. Superintendent of Police Panduranga Rane said they had flushed the area with water immediately and transferred the gas into two empty tankers. — Staff Correspondent

Sirsi: A 12-ft python found in Neernalli village near here was caught by five boys and handed over to the Forest Department.

Black panther dead

Karwar: A black panther was found dead in a paddy field between Torke and Devarbhavi villages near Gokarna on Tuesday. The panther's neck was found stuck in a steel wire loop laid by villagers in the field. According to forest officials, the panther died of suffocation. A black panther had died in the same area under similar circumstances one month ago. Assistant Conservator of Forest B.J. Naik said action would be taken against those responsible for the death of the panther.

Dharna ends

DHARWAD: The 24-hour dharna by anganwadi workers demanding regularisation of their services concluded here on Wednesday morning.

Hundreds of women from various parts of the district had assembled in Dharwad on Tuesday. They then took out a protest march from the Dr. Mallikarjun Mansur Kalabhavan to the office of the Deputy Commissioner. Anganwadi workers

appealed to the Government to sanction them a temporary pay of Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 1,500 to the helpers. — Staff Correspondent
