HYDERABAD: Arrears of electricity consumption charges and of surcharge on these amounts have been waived for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribe colonies in the State for the period till May 31, 2006. An estimated 6.45 lakh consumers in these colonies will benefit to the tune of Rs.183.43 crores from this "new scheme" announced by Energy Minister Mohd. Ali Shabbir here on Wednesday after a review of the issue by Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy. The Government will straightaway reimburse the loss of Rs.34.05 crores towards surcharge arrears to the AP Transco/discoms, the Minister and Rachel Chatterjee, CMD, AP Transco, said at a press conference later. The reimbursement of Rs.146.85 crores towards consumption charges is conditional.
