Rain damage in Kodagu put at Rs. 41.63 crore

Compensation disbursed to kin of eight persons who died in rain-related incidents


  • Government has released Rs. 5 crore to the district so far
  • PWD told to take up road repair works immediately

    Madikeri: Kodagu district suffered an estimated loss of Rs. 41.63 crore owing to heavy rainfall in the current season, according to Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav here on Thursday.

    A sum of Rs. 70 lakh had been released to tahsildars of the three taluks to take up immediate works, he said. Mr. Yadav said eight people had died in rain-related incidents in Kodagu during this seasonThe Government had released a sum of Rs. 5 crore to the district so far.

    As far as loss of cattle head was concerned, 40 cases were registered. Of this, 39 cases were given compensation amounting to Rs. 1.83 lakh. One case was rejected. As many as 944 houses were damaged in rain and Rs. 17 lakh relief was given to the affected people. Total loss estimated in this category was Rs. 68.91 lakh.

    Under the Department of Horticulture, the estimated loss had been put at Rs. 9.58 crore.

    The total area involved was 1,676.34 hectares of land. Agriculture loss was estimated at Rs. 70.77 lakh and the area affected was 1,130.02 hectares of land. Mr. Yadav has asked the PWD to take up road repair works immediately following the damage. He was touring Gonicoppa, Thithimathi, Talacauvery, Kanur Kembukolli, Balele, Murkal and Nagarahole areas in the district, which are in bad shape.

    Meanwhile, C.S. Arun Machaiah, MLC, on Tuesday, disbursed the relief cheques to the kin of the eight persons who died in rain-related incidents in Kodagu. The cheques amounting to Rs. 50,000 each was given away at the office of the Madikeri tahsildar here. The funds were provided from the Chief Ministers' Relief Fund.
