Uttaranchal
C. K. Chandramohan
DEHRA DUN: The Narain Dutt Tiwari Government placed the much- talked about Bill to rename Uttaranchal as Uttarakhand in the Vidhan Sabha on Wednesday, taking the renaming process a step further. The Union Cabinet had recommended the renaming of the State last month. The move is opposed by the Bharatiya Janata Party that had christened the new State as Uttaranchal when in power in Uttar Pradesh and at the Centre. The majority of the people in the region had all along fought for the hill State in the name of Uttarakhand. Talking to journalists, Chief Minister Narayan Dutt Tiwari said the move to rename the State as Uttarakhand was an important step to fulfil the dreams of the Uttarakhandis. Former Chief Minister and State BJP president Bhagat Singh Koshiary described the move as a Congress gimmick to emotionally attract votes in the upcoming elections in the state due early next year. Senior BJP leader and former Chief Minister Nitya Nand Swami ended his indefinite fast on the third day after Mr. Tiwari visited him and promised to withdraw all land acquisition proceedings in the villages around Dehra Dun city.
