New DCC chief set to revive party in Hassan

Staff Correspondent

The selection of Arkalgud Manju was unanimous

HASSAN: The appointment of Arkalgud Manju as president of Hassan

District Congress Committee (HDCC) is likely to strengthen the party.

The former Minister for Information, B. Shivaram told The Hindu that Mr. Manju's appointment would infuse a new strength in the party, which was in dire need of a strong leader to oppose the "anti-people" policies of Janata Dal (Secular).

Mr. Manju has played an important role in the Vokkaligara Sangh movement. He contested from Arkalgud as an independent candidate against A.T. Ramaswamy of the Congress in the Legislative Assembly election held in 1994, but was defeated.

In 1999, he tried for a Congress ticket, but finally contested as a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate. But he won by defeating A.T. Ramaswamy of the Congress. However, he did not stay long in BJP.

He, along with B.B. Shivappa and other rebel BJP legislators, joined the Congress. On A.T. Ramaswamy joining Janata Dal (Secular) in the run-up to the general elections in 2004, Mr. Manju contested as a Congress candidate and was defeated.

Let down

When G.V. Siddappa resigned from the post of DCC president, Kumaraswamy, a staunch follower of the late G. Puttaswamy Gowda, became ad-hoc president. But he left the party workers disappointed at large.
