CHENNAI: It is Deepavali time. Though most of us love to set off firecrackers, some are afraid to actually light the wick of a noisy bomb.

Silicon Labs, a bio-medical engineering company, which develops critical care monitoring equipment, has come up with a `Safe-Crack' device for the season.

The equipment, costing Rs.1,200, helps light the wick of a firecracker through a remote in much the same way as using a TV remote. Company managing director L. Narayanan said the remote ignition method of firecrackers can prevent fire accidents, injury or loss of life during festivities. The device does not pose any electric shock hazards and the invention simplifies and reduces cost by using commonly available infrared remotes used in television and audio players.

Safe-Crack will be sold during the season only in Chennai through shops and by telephonic booking. Interested persons can call 3254 2525/2239 6762.
