Public awareness lacking on how mosquitoes breed: official
|
CHENNAI
: An open house health meet on chikungunya held for the residents of Raja Annamalaipuram on Sunday underlined the importance of people's participation in controlling the spread of the disease. Participating in the open house meet, P. Kuganantham, Health Officer, Chennai Corporation, suggested that residents' welfare associations buy fogging machines and sprayers to control breeding of the mosquitoes to complement the civic agency's efforts to prevent the spread of the disease.
Mr. Kuganantham sought to highlight the lack of public awareness, even among the educated, on how mosquito breeding is encouraged by keeping water tanks and other containers open.
He attributed part of the blame for the mosquito menace to the lack of town planning. He said that despite a mandate for the private practitioners to notify the health authorities about patients infected with the disease, the doctors have not been responsive.
He added that only if there was adequate information about the number of infected persons, could the health officials take action to control the disease.
