Service centres for physically challenged

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: Krishna District Collector Navin Mittal on Wednesday said that all physically challenged people in the district would get pensions in the next two years.

While disabled persons living in villages selected under the Integrated Novel Development in Rural Areas and Model Municipal Areas (INDIRAMMA) scheme had already been receiving these pensions, those living in all other villages too would get the pensions in a phased manner, he said.

Mr. Mittal launched six service centres across the district for the benefit of physically challenged people at a programme organised here at the Sub-Collector's office.

The centres are located at Vijayawada, Avanigadda, Gudivada, Nuzivid, Thiruvuru and Jaggayyapeta.

He said at least 3 per cent of the vacancies in the district would be filled with physically challenged candidates. Already six physically challenged persons had been selected as village secretaries in the recent past.

Single window counters

The new service centres, functioning as single window counters, would help the disabled in getting all kinds of application forms and certificates.

They could also avail themselves of the services being offered by the centres, instead of visiting the Collectorate.

Plans were afoot to open one service centre for every three mandals in the district, Mr. Mittal said.

Deputy director of the disabled welfare department G. Narasimha Rao and others were present.

Missing persons unit

To trace the details of missing persons and help them reunite with their families, the city police have launched a `missing persons unit' in the police commissionerate.

Inspector of the special branch will monitor the functioning of this unit, which comprises a sub-inspector, a constable each from the east, west and central zones, a woman constable, an armed reserve constable and two home guards.

Missing cases registered in all police stations will be transferred to this unit and the case file will be sent back to the police station concerned only after identifying the missing person.
