Mangalore realises danger of bandhs

`Anti-social elements can take advantage'

MANGALORE: Bandhs can never be a permanent solution to any problem. After the spate of bandhs and communal clashes, Mangalore has woken up to this harsh fact.

State Bharatiya Janata Party president D.V. Sadananda Gowda said the person or organisation that had called for bandh had no responsibility towards his community. The Government should consider bandh calls as an attempt to disrupt peace and harmony.

Udupi Pejavar Math pontiff Visvesha Tirtha, who had been vice-president of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, said that bandhs should never be used as a tool of social resentment.

Muslim organisations such as the Indian Union Muslim League, the Karnataka Muslim Parishad and the Muslim Central Committee have also resented the frequent bandh calls. The Bajrang Dal and Sri Rama Sena also agreed that matters could go out of control during bandhs. Anti-social elements could run riot in vulnerable parts of the city.

Chairman of the Central Administrative Reforms Commission M. Veerappa Moily said bandhs disregarded the rule of law.
