Thrikkakara panchayat embarks on major development plan

Staff Reporter

Panchayat to open information centre today

KOCHI: Thrikkakara panchayat will formally launch its information centre at the panchayat office on Thursday.

The centre would accept complaints and issue receipts. The complaints would be looked into and action taken within a stipulated time, said panchayat president Sabitha Kareem here on Wednesday.

She said the centre would operate from the panchayat office and a staff of the panchayat administration would accept the complaints. The complaints received would be brought to the notice of the panchayat administration immediately.

Opening of the centre came ahead of the vigilance committees (Jaagratha Samithis) that would come up at the panchayat and ward levels soon, said Ms. Kareem. She said the formation of vigilance committees would come up for the approval of the panchayat committee scheduled for next Monday. The panchayat committee would also take into consideration a master plan for the comprehensive development of Kakkanad. The panchayat president said the plan for setting up a national-level sports complex in Thrikkakara received a shot in the arm with the district administration allocating 36 more cents of land for the complex. The panchayat had earmarked 2.5 acres for the purpose.

Meanwhile, cleaning of the panchayat areas and fogging advanced substantially in the Thrikkakara panchayat area compared to the local bodies in its neighbourhood. Ms. Kareem said that fogging was launched on September 27 along with cleaning up of residential areas.

The panchayat also conducted four medical camps in view of the spread of chikungunya in some parts of the State. At least, seven more medical camps would be conducted in various wards of the panchayat soon, she said.

Ms. Kareem claimed that Thrikkakara was one of the first panchayats to react to the emergency situation that called for concerted efforts to clean up the panchayat areas.

The panchayat authorities sought the help of local bodies, NGOs and trade communities in its efforts to give the cleanliness drive a boost. Students in the MSW Department of Bharat Matha College would take up cleaning up of some of the key areas in the panchayat on Friday.

The panchayat's experiments with decentralised facilities for disposal of waste met with resounding success as was evident from the units running at the NGO Quarters, Surabhi Nagar residential area and the Thrikkakara Cooperative Grama Panchayat Hospital, said Ms. Kareem.

She said that more than 150 women from the Kudumbasree units successfully experimented with local facilities for waste disposal. They bought two new autorickshaws to collect waste from some of the key locations in the panchayat, including from the Vazhakkala market.

A plastic cutting machine would soon be put up on the panchayat premises to help the Kudumbasree women to handle the plastic waste. The processed plastic would either be used in road building or sold for re-processing. The panchayat had, earlier this year, distributed containers for domestic vermi compost units. An amount of Rs.1 lakh was spent on distribution of the containers to 50 families to spread the idea of decentralised waste disposal.
