BANGALORE: A pregnant woman and her husband were among the four persons killed in two road accidents that occurred in quick succession near Vijayapura Cross on National Highway-47 in Devanahalli taluk of Bangalore Rural district on Wednesday afternoon. The police said that around 1.30 p.m., a stone-laden lorry, which was coming from Chickaballapur, hit an autorickshaw near the Jain Temple at Vijayapura Cross. The autorickshaw driver, Narayanaswamy (25) of Devanahalli, and two passengers were killed. The passengers were identified as Shivanna (40), Project Officer in the Education Department, and his wife Veena (30), a teacher. The couple, hailing from Pavagada taluk of Tumkur district, were working in Bangalore. The police said that along with Veena, who was in advanced stage of pregnancy, the foetus was killed. Barely five minutes after the accident, a private bus hit a motorcycle at Vijayapura Cross, 20 metres away from the scene of the first accident. The motorcycle rider, Narayanaswamy (38) of Yeliyur in Devanahalli taluk, was killed on the spot. All the bodies have been kept at the Government Hospital mortuary in Devanahalli. The police have registered separate cases and are on the lookout for lorry and bus drivers, who abandoned their vehicles and ran away. Following the accident, vehicular movement was affected for an hour on the busy highway. The police rushed to the spot and cleared the road.
Student dies
Arun Nair (21), an engineering student, was killed after a private bus hit the motorcycle on which he was riding pillion with his friend Nikil. The accident occurred around 8.30 p.m. at Santhe Circle in Yelahanka. on Tuesday Nair, a native of Kerala, was a third semester student of Venkateshwara Engineering College in Chikkajala.
