Wage ceiling up for ESI coverage

KOCHI: The Union Government has notified the enhancement of wage ceiling for coverage of employees under the ESI Act from Rs.7,500 to Rs.10,000 a month with effect from October 1. Consequently ten more slabs of standard benefit rates have been added, says Cherian Kurian, deputy director of ESI based at Thrissur.

As per the notification, all employees whose wage (excluding remuneration for O.T.) exceeds Rs.7,500 a month, but does not exceed Rs.10,000, would become coverable under the ESI Act, 1948, with effect from October 1.

Ten more slabs of standard benefit rate have been added in the standard benefit rate, enhancing the maximum daily standard benefit rate from Rs.145 to Rs.195.
