Firms look out for "ethical" hackers

US firm ties up with Indian company

HYDERABAD: With the threat of hackers on the rise, enterprises are making ethical hackers as part of their security systems and are looking out for certified hacking professionals.

According to International Council of Electronic Commerce Consultants (EC-Council) president Sanjay Bavasi, about 40,000 professionals have been trained to be ethical hackers and the council has even certified 8,000 of them.

Announcing the New York-based council's partnership with TechWorks Learning Solutions in India at a press conference here on Tuesday, he said the e-business certification from EC-Council would combine both business and technical training in security related aspects. Its clientele included some of the large global companies like Deloitte, Microsoft besides the defence industry while banking and financial services and healthcare sectors were increasingly feeling the need for the expertise. Mr. Sanjay, who was accompanied by TechWorks Managing Director S. Hymavathy, said an important aspect security professionals needed to understand was with regard to social engineering. In house security experts, in the form of ethical hackers, were now being inducted in large corporations.

Poor understanding

Recent surveys pointed that there was poor understanding about the overall security management even from an IT security manager's perspective wherein creating a firewall and having an anti-virus was thought to be adequate. Since security breaches within the organisation constituted a major chunk of the problem, the fear that a security expert was keeping tab in itself was sufficient to curb such breach.
