Corrections and clarifications

* The sentence in "Manmohan calls for `inclusive globalisation'" (October 12, 2006) was: "Tracing the academic career of Dr. Singh, as well as his association with Cambridge, the Orator doffed his mortar board when he said that `you may note the colour of his turban' — mitrae colorem uideritis! — a reference to the university's blue which the Prime Minister himself said was one of his favourite colours `and is often seen on my head.'" A reader points out that mitrae colorem uideritis! should have been mitrae colorem videritis! (Videritis is the subjunctive perfect of videre which is "to see" in Latin. "Vision", "visor", "visible" are from the same Latin root (videre, visum).

Another sentence in the same report was: "The Orator said, `Millions look to this man: they see in him someone of conspicuous integrity; he is, in the words of the Greek poet Simonides, cool and clam, well aware of the justice that serves the state, and a man of healing virtue.'" "Clam" should have been "calm". This error was corrected in later editions.

* Referring to the report "Leading hotelier Lalit Suri dead" (October 11, 2006), a reader has objected to a detail in a sentence that stated that Suri was born in Rawalpindi in Pakistan on April 15, 1947, pointing out that Pakistan was formed only on August 14, 1947. Till then it was a part of India.

* "AIADMK men held for giving away nose rings" (Chennai city, October 12, 2006) said the headline. Going by the text, they must have been huge ones, each weighing 100 gm, said a large number of readers. Because of an editing error, "mg" (milligram) got converted to "gm" (gram).

* In "Polling peaceful in Madurai Central by-election, 68 per cent turnout" (October 12, 2006), the strapline mentioned AIADMK candidate seeking re-poll in two booths. The relevant paragraph got omitted in the text in some editions.

* In "Lloyd stresses on the need for an academy" ("Sport", October 11, 2006) it was stated that Lloyd evoked memories of some of the most lethal innings he had played in the history of the game, not to forget the unbeaten 102 in the 1975 World Cup final at Lord's, an innings that sealed the fate of the contest. A reader says that though it was the best innings from Lloyd, he was beaten. The Sports Desk clarifies that Lloyd was dismissed for 102.

* A reader points out that in the PTI report "Tania topples Topel" ("Sport", October 8, 2006), the score of (chess) Grandmaster Deepan Chakravarthy differed in the text and the results table. The score in the results column (2.5) was incorrect. The score was 3, as mentioned in the text.
