Rs.156-crore drinking water scheme for Alappuzha

Staff Reporter

Under a Central scheme for medium towns

ALAPPUZHA: A Rs.156-crore project will be implemented in the district under the Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium Towns (UIDSMT) of the Union Government to provide drinking water to residents of Alappuzha municipality and eight neighbouring panchayats.

Alappuzha municipal chairman P.P. Chitharanjan said here on Thursday that the project was in place of a failed Hudco drinking water scheme for the town.

The details of the project would be finalised at a meeting in Thiruvananthapuram on October 18.

Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac, Cooperation Minister G. Sudhakaran, Alappuzha MLA K.C. Venugopal, and Kerala Water Authority Managing Director T.P. Mohan Lal would participate in the meeting.

Mr. Chitharanjan said the Union Government was expected to provide a major part of the project cost as grant. Mr. Isaac, who promised liberal help for the project, already allotted part of the aid. The remaining amount would be earmarked in the 2007-08 State budget.

The project aimed to bring water from the Pampa, as in the proposed HUDCO-aided scheme, and after purification supply it to the town and the neighbouring panchayats, he said.

Around five lakh people were expected to benefit from the project, he added.
