Congress to consider Mamata proposal

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: The West Bengal Congress leadership has called a special meeting to discuss the proposal of Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee to pursue a joint movement against the alleged acquisition of agricultural land by the State Government to set up industries.

Ms. Banerjee followed up her recent talk over telephone with Union Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, with a letter to the State Congress leadership, calling for a sustained campaign against the State Government.

"Ms. Banerjee has written a letter to me containing her proposal", working president of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee Pradip Bhattacharya said here on Thursday. The meeting has been slated for October 15.

Copies of the letter have been sent to Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee, who is also the president of the WBPCC and Mr Dasmunsi.

After the matter is discussed at the meeting, the party leadership will take up Ms. Banerjee's proposal for a joint campaign with the Congress High Command next week.
