Grenades seized

Srikakulam: The police seized 150 electrical detonators, grenades, 350 audio cassettes and 150 books of revolutionary literature in the Andhra-Orissa border area of Kondaburudi on Thursday. They also seized 150 gelatine sticks in Mandasa area of Srikakulam district. Special Correspondent

Three girls drowned

CHITTOOR: Three girls belonging to Pillarikuppam village of S.R. Puram mandal, 25 km from here, were drowned on Wednesday in Perumalappa irrigation tank. The girls — Sobha (10), Vijayalakshmi (10), Deepa (9) — while returning from a nearby forest had decided to swim in the tank and were drowned. — Correspondent

Free dengue camp

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Private Medical and Dental Colleges Association will conduct dengue and chikungunya clinics wherein blood tests will be conducted free of cost. Free medicines will be distributed. P. Ajay Kumar, president of the association, on Thursday said that platelet transfusion and ventilator support, too, would be done free of cost at all hospitals attached to private medical colleges.

SSC exam fee date

HYDERABAD: The last date for paying the examination fee and submission of forms for SSC-2007 examination is October 27. However, students can pay up to November 13 with a fine of Rs. 50, till November 28 with a fine of Rs. 200 and till December 13 with a fine of Rs. 500. Fee for regular candidates for all subjects is Rs. 125 and for candidates with three or less backlogs is Rs. 110. Attendance exemption fee for private candidates is Rs. 650 in addition to the exam fee. — Staff Reporter

Injured in accident

ONGOLE: Scheduled Castes Finance Corporation Executive Director Trinadha Rao was injured when his vehicle collided with an RTC bus near Kandukur on Thursday. His driver died on the spot. — Special Correspondent

Party activists clash

TENALI: Ten persons were injured in a clash between Congress and TDP supporters at Chukkapallivaripalem of Duggirala mandal in Guntur district on Thursday. An argument between a supporter of sarpanch Mathangi Chreesthudas and another person over the local body elections led to the clash.

Worker's body found

KURNOOL: Body of a worker Antharjami (21) was found at the accident site on the premises of Rayalaseema Alkalies here on Thursday. The worker was sleeping on the platform when the structure collapsed. The management paid an ex gratia of Rs. 4 lakhs to his family. — Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC) has been selected as the `most effective State regulator' in a poll conducted by The Powerline magazine among a select group of industry experts across the country. Crop loan

CHITTOOR: Indian Bank has disbursed a crop loan of Rs.4, 892.15 lakh to 21,178 farmers during 2006. In a press release, Deputy General Manager P.K. Chopra said similarly Rs.1, 775.93 lakh had been distributed, as agricultural term loan, to 2,578 farmers. The bank would be giving top priority in issuing housing and educational loans. Around 108 students were given education loans of Rs.238.70 lakh. Besides, Rs.424.83 lakh was sanctioned as loans to 137 persons for the construction of houses. -Correspondent

Workshop held

CHITTOOR: The State and Central Governments are giving top priority for providing complete sanitation and protected drinking water for the people in urban and rural areas according to Ganeswar Rao, Chief Engineer of R.W.S.

A one-day workshop was organised by Chittoor Water Management and Sanitation Society here on Thursday to bring awareness among sarpanches, M.P.T.C., and Z.P.T.C. members about providing sanitation and pure drinking water. Nearly 13 lakh children die every year in the country due to lack of sanitation and pure drinking water including 60,000 children in the State. -Correspondent

Rs.238-cr. works planned under ITDA

ADILABAD : New works related to supply of drinking water, road formations and minor irrigation schemes in tribal areas all worth Rs. 238 crores have been proposed recently by the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA), Utnoor. ITDA Project Officer Saurabh Gaur said the about 150 works would be taken up in the tribal sub-plan areas in near future. Under the Rural and Interior Areas Development Programme roads with a total length of 314 kms would be laid with NABARD funds. Similarly, Minor irrigation tanks works to irrigate an area of over 26,000 acres would be taken up at an estimated cost of Rs. 120 crores.-Staff Reporter

Power supply to farm sector

ADILABAD : Power to agriculture farmers would now be supplied in accordance to categorisation under three groups and in two spells. For `A' group consumers the 7-hour power supply would be given between midnight and 10 a.m. every day. The `B' group consumers would get power between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. and midnight and the `C' group consumers would be supplied power between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. and midnight and 3 a.m. every day according to a press release by Chief Managing Director of the northern Discom V. Traders apprehensive over new curbs

Kakinada: Traders dealing with the pulses are having their own apprehensions over the new restrictions imposed by the Government under the AP Scheduled Commodities Dealers (licensing and distribution) Order, according to Grandhi Narayanarao Babji, president of the East Godavari Pulses and Oils Dealers association.

Mr. Babji said it would in no way benefit the consumer. - Correspondent

Kishore on Thursday asked officials, drafted for each mandal for elimination of domestic child labour, to identify children out of schools and enrol them in rehabilitation schools. Man killed in accident

JEYPORE: Jagadiswar Rao (40), secretary of the Malkanagiri district Cricket Association, was killed and three others were seriously injured in a road accident in Srikakulam district on Monday.

Two commit suicide

Jeypore: Two persons committed suicide in separate incidents in Jeypore sub-division on Monday evening. Banamali Pangi (35) of Bodakavidi village under Sardar police station consumed poison and died in hospital. The second incident occurred at Kumbar Sahi in Jeypore town where Mamata Tripathi (40) ended her life.

Lalu for Bapatla today

GUNTUR: Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad will inaugurate the Road Over Bridge at Bapatla on the Guntur - Chirala State Highway on Friday evening.

Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu will accompany the Union Minister for the inaugural at 6.25 p.m. All MPs from Guntur District, Minister for Transport Kanna Lakshmi Narayana and Minister for R&B and Ports J. Ramamohana Rao will also attend the function.

Motorists told to play it safe

KHAMMAM: Regional Transport Officer Kumara Bhaskar wanted the motorists, especially heavy vehicle drivers to remain extra vigilant and follow traffic rules while driving in and around school zones.

Addressing a workshop on road safety for schoolchildren at NRM High School at Yellandu crossroads, he said students would not be completely aware of the risk involved in crossing the road.
