Salary to be paid early for Ramzan

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Government officials will get their salaries for October in advance in connection with Ramzan. Finance Minister Thomas Isaac announced in the Assembly on Thursday that the salaries would be disbursed on October 18, 19 and 29 despite the financial problems of the State. The Minister said the Planning Commission had allowed the State to change the sectoral allotments proposed for using tsunami funds.

Remanded in CBI custody

Kochi: A Central Bureau of Investigation Special Court, on Thursday, remanded P. Raveendran, former secretary of the Pariksha Bhavan, arrested in connection with the SSLC question paper leak case, in CBI custody till Monday. He was produced before the court by the investigating agency. — Staff Reporter

Probe promised

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Sports and Youth Affairs Minister M. Vijayakumar has said that he will personally inquire how the Kerala team for the Santosh Trophy came to travel by Second Class for the prestigious tournament being held in Haryana. Replying to a submission by P.C. George (KC-Secular) in the Assembly on Thursday, the Sports Minister said that teams and individuals who participate in national and international tournaments are eligible for 50 per cent concession in the First Class and 75 per cent concession in Second A/C compartments. — Special Correspondent

Accused to undergo scientific tests

Kochi: The Judicial First Class Magistrate here on Thursday said that no permission of the court was required for subjecting Bechu Rahman, the fourth accused in the case relating to assault on former Sabarimala tantri Kadararu Mohanararu, to scientific tests such as brain mapping and polygraph tests.

Dismissing an application by the police, the Magistrate said that the High Court had held that the investigation agency could adopt modern scientific methods. The court remanded Bechu Rahman to judicial custody till October 26.

Seminar on commerce curriculum

PATHANAMTHITTA: A two-day national seminar on `New curriculum and instructional design in commerce for a knowledge-centric society,' organised by the Department of Commerce at St. Thomas College, Kozhencherry, started in the college auditorium on Thursday. Metropolitan Zacharias Mar Theophilus Saffragon inaugurated the seminar. — Staff Reporter

Elephant presented to Guruvayur temple

Thrissur: The former Union Minister Kamal Morarka presented an elephant to the Guruvayur Devaswom on Thursday. The 14-year-old elephant, named Gajendran (Sooryadevan), was received by Melsanthi Mundayur Illathu Narayanan Namboodiri at 7 a.m. after the Seeveli rites. The number of elephants owned by the Devaswom is 63 now, according to temple officials. — Staff Reporter

Award for Satchidanandan

THRISSUR: Writer and former secretary of the Central Sahithya Akademi K. Satchidanandan has been selected for the award instituted by the Alumni Association of the Malayalam Department of Sree Kerala Varma College here. The award, titled the Sree Kerala Varma Literary Award, carries a purse of Rs.10,001, a sculpture and a citation. He gets the award for his total collected works published in 2006. — Staff Reporter

Woman, children found dead

PALAKKAD: A mother and her two children were found dead on the railway track at Ayyappankotta, between Mankara and Lakkidi railway stations, near Ottapalam, on Thursday. The deceased have been identified as Vijayam, 26, wife of Haridas, of Kottukad, Akalur, and her children, Athira, 6, and Prithwiraj, 4. The Ottapalam police have registered a case. The dead bodies were taken to Ottapalam taluk hospital for the post-mortem examination. — Staff Reporter
