RBI to issue `star series' of banknotes
Special Correspondent
Bangalore:
Do not be suspicious of these new banknotes; the RBI will soon issue its "star series" of banknotes.
To begin with, there will be Rs. 10, Rs. 20 and Rs. 50 denominations in the Mahatma Gandhi series-2005.
The star series will look exactly like the existing banknotes, but will have an additional character, a "star" in the numbers panel between the prefix and the serial number.
The bands of pockets containing the star series number will clearly indicate it on the packets.
The star series banknotes will be legal tender and can be freely accepted by the public, the RBI said. The star mark has a significance; they denote defectively printed notes replaced with a fresh one with the same serial number. Fresh banknote packets issued by the RBI are at present serially numbered from 1 to 100.
