BANGALORE: The Government will launch a new cultural initiative with the launch of `Janapada Jatre,' a festival of folk arts, on October 14. The jatre will be held every second Saturday and Sunday in front of the Vidhana Soudha and every fourth Saturday and Sunday at Lalbagh. Besides, it will also be held in all district headquarters every last Saturday and Sunday. The jatre will also have an exhibition and sale of crafts plus "desi" food. Speaking to presspersons on Thursday, Secretary (Kannada and Culture, Information and Tourism) I.M. Vittalmurthy said holding the jatre was an effort to protect and revive the various forms of folk art in accordance with the promises made in the budget. There were over 180 different forms of folk art in the State. But the Government had identified only 70 of them. The Government would give a daily remuneration of Rs. 300 for all 300 artistes through cheques. This kind of arrangement would enable a performing artist to earn a minimum of Rs. 1,500 during each of his performance schedule. Besides, the Government would provide free board and lodging and also bear the travelling expenses. Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy would inaugurate the cultural bonanza that would mark the launch of the programmes for Suvarna Karnataka on October 14. Bangalore Doordarshan would telecast the inaugural session live, he added. The Government was planning to accommodate 4,000 people to watch the cultural extravaganza.
